A video letter project between Buenos Aires and Fukushima, Yokohama

ハンブルク美術大学(ドイツ)のドキュメンタリーコースの講師ネレ・ヴォールアッツのワークショップに参加。これは、ディ・テラ大学(ブエノスアイレス, アルゼンチン)の芸術学科映画コースに在籍する学生であり編集マンのフランカ・マルファティとのビデオレタープロジェクト。
2020年3月まで、僕は横浜で5月に開催予定の個展の準備をしていた。横浜中華街を撮影しにいく日々。そこでは、黄金町に住むアーティストや飲み屋街の人々と様々な出会いがあった。
撮影をしていた3月末のこと、オリンピック延期とともに、コロナウィルスの蔓延が加速していく。
そんな中で、僕は一旦福島へ戻り、緊急事態宣言を迎えていた。そんな中、ハンブルク美術大学(ドイツ)のドキュメンタリーコースから突然このワークショップに参加しないか、というメールが来て、このワークショップに参加することになった。突然、自分の部屋を出ずに、ビデオレター制作に参加することになる。内容は、講師のネレが、過去にブエノス・アイレスに住んでいて、並行してネットを介して、映画学科の講師をやっているらしく、そのため、その授業を受講するアルゼンチン人の学生とビデオレターの交換を行うというものだった。これは、僕が住む横浜と福島とブエノス・アイレスに住む＝フランカ・マルファティとの2020年4月末から8月までやりとりした映像記録の物語である。
I participated in a workshop of a lecturer Nele Wohlatz in the documentary course at University of Fine Arts Hamburg(Germany). This was a video letter project with Franca Malfatti who is a student of Programa de Cine | Departamento de Arte at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and works as an editor.
Until March 2020, I was in Yokohama and preparing for a solo exhibition to be held in May, 2020 that I filmed Yokohama Chinatown. There, I had various encounters with some artists living in a district - Koganecho area and people in some bars.
When I was filming at the end of March, the spread of the coronavirus accelerated with the postponement of the Olympics.
In the midst of all this, I returned to Fukushima and faced the declaration of a state of emergency. I suddenly received an email from the documentary course at University of Fine Arts Hamburg(Germany) asking if I like to participate in this workshop by Nele Wohlatz. I decided to attend. So, all of a sudden, I found myself participating in an attempt to make a video letter without leaving my room. The content was that the instructor - Nele who had lived in Buenos Aires in the past and now she teaches at Programa de Cine | Departamento de Arte Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in parallel via the Internet, therefore, we decided to make a video letter exchange with the students in Argentina who were taking her class. This is the story about my correspondence with Franca Malfatti who lives in Buenos Aires. The film is made by us from the end of April to August 2020.
